The Reasons Luxury Vinyl Plank Has Become So Popular in Canada

Buyers notice floors right away. Old, stained carpet, damaged wood floors or mismatched flooring give a signal that the home needs work. Meanwhile, fresh, modern flooring makes a house look clean and modern, and that often helps attract more buyers.

Lately, luxury vinyl plank has become one of the best-selling floor coverings for Canadian homeowners. There are good reasons for that: it looks great, it stands up to spills, and it fits a wide range of budgets.

Moisture protection is a second key role, particularly over concrete. A concrete slab may release moisture vapour over time, and an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier protects the flooring from this source warping.

When shopping for new floors, most of the attention goes to colour, the style and price. But what you put under your planks is just as important. A good underlayment can improve comfort, noise levels and moisture protection, while it helps your new floor last longer.

Consistency matters too. Too many different floors from room to room often makes a space look smaller. Running the same floor through the main living areas gives a more spacious look that looks great in listing photos.

Real hardwood remains the traditional favourite. It adds natural character that is hard to copy, and it is often sanded and refinished more than once over its life. Being able to refinish it means a well-kept hardwood floor can last a very long time. Hardwood also increases resale value in many markets.

In the end, what option is right for you? If long-term value and refinishing potential are your priority, choose engineered or solid hardwood. When cost, durability and low upkeep come first, quality laminate makes a lot of sense.

Road salt can leave a hazy residue that will dull the finish of hardwood, laminate and vinyl. Wipe up residue quickly with a soft mop together with a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid soaking the floor on hardwood and laminate.

Moisture levels is another key factor. During the heating season, the air in your home often becomes too dry, leading to wood floors to shrink and cracks to form. A humidifier to maintain indoor humidity around 35 to 50 percent protects your floors as well as your health.

Before anything else, evaluate the moisture level of the concrete. A simple test like taping a plastic sheet to the floor for 24 to 48 hours can reveal whether moisture comes through. Fix drainage issues prior to installing anything.

Real wood is one of the most requested features buyers ask for most. Engineered hardwood gives you the same appeal and better stability in Canadian conditions. If your budget is tighter, luxury vinyl plank is able to create an equally attractive finish for less.

If you are choosing a classic wood look, two options usually top the list: laminate and real hardwood. Both are beautiful, yet they have important differences when it comes to cost, durability and maintenance.

LVP is widely considered the best choice below grade. Most LVP collections are waterproof, meaning they will not be damaged when humidity appears. Rigid-core vinyl also bridge slight unevenness in the slab.

Today’s laminate flooring has evolved dramatically. Premium laminate products use realistic printed designs and textured surfaces that look remarkably realistic. The tough top layer makes it resistant to scratches, and it is priced less. Many collections now include better moisture protection.

One important note: some flooring products already have an attached underlayment. When that is the case, adding a second layer may create problems and affect the warranty. Always check the manufacturer’s guidelines.

The first line of defence is the entrance. Use a heavy-duty mat outside plus an absorbent mat inside every entrance. This combination stops the majority of the snow and grit before it can scratch your flooring. Use a boot rack to make sure wet boots don’t sit directly on the floor.

Winter in Canada are beautiful, yet they are tough on floors. Melting snow, de-icing salt, gravel and low indoor humidity will wear out your flooring if left unchecked. With some simple precautions, it is easy to keep your flooring beautiful through the winter.

Engineered hardwood is a possibility when you prefer natural wood. Thanks to its cross-ply structure, engineered wood handles humidity changes far better than solid hardwood, which is a poor choice on concrete. Always use an appropriate underlay for long-term performance.

If you are planning to sell in the next few years, or even if you are looking to refresh your living space, new flooring ranks among the smartest renovations available. Your floors cover nearly the entire surface of a house, which means they have a huge impact on how buyers feel.

Porcelain tile remains extremely durable, though it tends to feel chilly if you do not install radiant floor heating. Wall-to-wall carpet, meanwhile, feels warm but may hold moisture, which is why carpet tiles are often a better solution.
