Engineered Wood Flooring: The Ideal Choice for the Canadian Climate

Whatever material you choose, don’t overlook proper installation: caulking around the tub and toilet, good thresholds and a well-prepared subfloor. Those small details matter a lot in how long your floor will last.

That is exactly where engineered hardwood stands out. Instead of being made from a single solid piece of wood, an engineered plank is built from several layers: a real hardwood top layer bonded to a dimensionally stable base. That construction reduces the natural movement of wood.

Selecting a new floor is one of the most important decisions you will make during a remodeling project. In Canada, the decision is even more critical because our floors need to survive cold, dry winters, muggy summers, snow and road salt carried in on every boot.

Vinyl plank flooring is usually at the top of the list for families. It is waterproof or highly water-resistant, so pet accidents are easy to clean up. Salt residue can leave white marks that can etch the protective layer of your floor. Remove residue as soon as possible with a damp microfibre mop and a floor-specific cleaner. Stay away from steam mops on wood-based floors.

Laminate is another good contender. Its hard melamine surface stays highly resistant to claw marks, often better than vinyl. Choose products with a high abrasion rating and water-resistant features for the best performance.

Before anything else, check the humidity in your basement. A simple test like taping a plastic sheet onto the slab for 24 to 48 hours can show whether moisture comes through. Solve any leaks prior to installing new flooring.

Ceramic and porcelain tile remains virtually waterproof, though it feels chilly unless install in-floor heating. Carpet, on the other hand, is cozy but can trap moisture, which is why carpet tiles are often a safer bet.

Engineered hardwood can also work when you prefer a genuine wood surface. Because of its cross-ply structure, it tolerates moisture swings much better than solid wood, which is a poor choice in basements. Always use a moisture barrier to protect it.

LVP is often the best choice for lower levels. Several LVP collections are fully waterproof, so they will not swell or rot if humidity happens. Rigid core planks also bridge small irregularities in the subfloor.

Finishing a basement is one of the best ways to increase the usable space and value to your home. However basements bring unique challenges: cold concrete, dampness and lower temperatures. A poor flooring choice may result in mold, warping and costly repairs.

Houses across Canada experience dramatic humidity changes throughout the year. In winter, heating systems dry out indoor air; in summer, moisture levels climb sharply. For wood floors, these changes may cause cracks, warping and noise.

What you get is simply flooring with the look exactly like real hardwood but performs better in Canadian conditions. Because it moves less, engineered hardwood is often suitable in rooms in which solid wood is a risk, including below-grade rooms or on concrete.
