Engineered Hardwood Flooring: A Smart Choice for Canada’s Climate

The right underlay also smooths out small irregularities in the subfloor while adds a little cushioning and warmth. Note, however, it does not replace a flat subfloor: large dips and bumps should be corrected first.

Real hardwood remains the traditional favourite. It offers authentic grain that many buyers love, and it is often refinished several times over the decades. Being able to refinish it means a well-kept hardwood floor will last a very long time. It also adds buyer appeal in many markets.

The first line of defence is the entrance. Place a sturdy outdoor mat and a washable absorbent rug indoors every entrance. Two mats traps much of the dirt and salt before it can scratch the rest of the house. Set up a waterproof tray so wet boots aren’t left on the floor.

Moisture protection is another critical function, especially over concrete. Concrete subfloors can release moisture vapour over time, and a vapour barrier protects laminate and wood floors from warping.

Finishing a basement is a great way to gain extra square footage and resale value in your house. Yet below-grade spaces bring specific problems: concrete slabs, humidity and lower temperatures. A poor flooring choice often causes mildew, warping and wasted money.

Porcelain tile stays extremely durable, though it feels cold if you do not combine it with a heated floor system. Wall-to-wall carpet, meanwhile, is cozy yet can absorb humidity, so area rugs are often a better solution.

If you live with pets and kids, you know how quickly floors suffer. Claws, toy cars and blocks, spills and snow and slush quickly stain the wrong floor faster than you think. Luckily: modern floor products are made to stand up to real life.

Modern laminate has come a long way dramatically. High-quality laminate products uses high-definition images and Suggested Reading textured surfaces that look very close to real wood. Its wear layer makes it resistant to daily wear, and it costs less. A growing number of newer products also offer improved water resistance.

Installing it tends to be easier. Based on the product, engineered wood can be installed as a floating floor, glued or nailed. This versatility helps make it a favourite for installers and DIYers across the country.

Moisture levels is also critical. When the furnace is running, the air in your home gets too dry, leading to wood floors to shrink and small gaps to appear. A whole-house humidifier keeping humidity at a stable level benefits your wood floors and your health.

Before anything else, check the humidity in your basement. A simple test for example taping a square of plastic onto the slab for 24 to 48 hours will indicate whether moisture comes through. Solve drainage issues before installing any floor.

Winter in Canada can be picturesque, yet it is rough on your floors. Snow, calcium chloride, gravel and dry indoor air will damage your flooring over time. With the right routine, you can protect your flooring looking great all season long.

Laminate is also a great option. The hard melamine surface is very resistant to scuffs and scratches, sometimes even more than vinyl. Choose a laminate with an AC4 or AC5 rating plus water-resistant features for busy homes.

One of its main jobs is sound reduction. Floors that are not glued down often sound hollow without proper underlayment. A good acoustic underlay absorbs that hollow sound, which is especially useful in multi-storey homes where strata rules often demand minimum sound ratings.

One important note: some planks come with an attached underlayment. When that is the case, doubling up could lead to joint failure and cancel your warranty. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Ultimately, which floor makes sense? When the real thing and the ability to refinish matter most, go with engineered or solid hardwood. If cost, durability and low upkeep are more important, laminate makes a lot of sense.

Canadian homes experience dramatic humidity changes every year. In winter, furnaces pull moisture from indoor air; in the warm months, humidity go up quickly. For natural wood, this cycle may cause cracks, warping and movement.

That is exactly where engineered wood makes a difference. Instead of using a single solid piece of wood, engineered flooring consists of multiple layers: a top layer of real wood on top of a plywood or HDF core. This layered structure reduces the natural movement of wood.

Engineered hardwood is a possibility for those who want natural wood. Because of its stable core, engineered wood resists humidity changes better than solid wood, which is not recommended below grade. Install it with a proper vapour barrier for long-term performance.

Vinyl plank is often the go-to floor for lower levels. Several vinyl products are waterproof, meaning they will not swell or rot when humidity appears. Rigid-core planks also tolerate slight unevenness in the concrete.

When shopping for new floors, they usually focus on the colour, the style and the price per square foot. Yet what lies beneath your planks is just as important. A good underlayment improves comfort, sound and moisture protection, and it helps your flooring perform better.
